Dear Friends,

While enjoying the spring flowers, I’m keeping busy teaching a college course about Theology and Music. The first question I ask the class, and myself, is—what is music? In the process of formulating my own definition, I’ve been challenged and amused by the ideas of others. These range from 18th-century philosopher G.W. Leibniz (“Music is a kind of counting, performed by the mind without knowing that it is counting”) to 20th-century guitarist and songwriter Jimi Hendrix (“You can’t mess with people’s heads, that’s for sure. But that’s what music’s all about—messing with people’s heads.”)

You needn’t be able to say what music is in order to enjoy it, however. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the always-exciting Tokyo Big Band’s show, and several jazz chapel concerts. Be there, for as saxophonist Eric Dolphy said, “When you hear music, after it’s over, it’s gone, in the air, you can never capture it again!”

yours, Steve
