Wise Words on Art

Culture is not a territory to be won or lost but a resource we are called to steward with care. Culture is a garden to be cultivated.
(Mako Fujimura, painter)

The meaning of something lies in its connection with, indication of, or reference to something beyond itself, so that its full nature points to and is revealed in that connection.
(Leonard Meyer, aesthetic philosopher)

If a man were permitted to make all the ballads he need not care who should make the laws of a nation.
(Andrew Fletcher, writer and politician)

Songs flow with the current of this world; this world flows with the current of songs.  (Japanese proverb)

Human beings, vegetables or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible player.  (Albert Einstein)
